The death has occurred of Méadhbh Conway-Piskorski, the former head of children’s and education programmes at RTÉ. Ms Conway-Piskorski (83) died yesterday in Dublin after a short illness.

From an Irish-speaking household in Ballivor, Co Meath, she was educated at St Louis Convent in Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, and at University College Dublin, where she gained an MA in French literature.

She worked for Coimisiún na Logainmeacha along with a future RTÉ colleague, Ciarán Mac Mathúna.

Ms Conway-Piskorski was involved with the creation of RTÉ’s television’s service in the early 1960s and was head of children’s television and then of its education department when it became a separate entity in 1969.

After retiring in 1994, she became very involved with Age and Opportunity, Parlaimint na mBan, she wrote numerous academic articles, and also edited and published two books of writings – including Seanchas na Mídhe – by her mother, the teacher and archaeologist Mairéad Ní Chonmhidhe.
