Berlin - Two former East German border guards were each given suspended six-month jail sentences yesterday for killing a man who was attempting to flee to West Germany in 1955.

A court in Potsdam outside Berlin sentenced the two men for firing the fatal shots at a 69-year-old man on January 29th, 1955, who was trying to cross the East German border south of Berlin.
