A proposed strike by English football players from December 1st was called off today after an agreement was reached with the players' union in a dispute over television money.

Adam Crozier, FA chief executive, told a news conference that an "amicable settlement" had been reached at a meeting this afternoon.

Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) chief Gordon Taylor gave no precise details of the agreement.

But he said: "We have put discord behind us. We have secured the long-term future of the PFA."

The strike, announced on Tuesday, would have been the first in the history of the English game.

Taylor has been demanding a cut of about Stg£27 million a year from the current television broadcasting deal.
