Two people have died from a rare "flesh-eating" disease in one of Northern Ireland's main hospitals.

Hospital authorities confirmed that a woman died from necrotising fasciitis at Craigavon Area Hospital in Co Armagh two weeks ago. The woman, from Portadown, died 10 hours after being admitted to hospital. A man died at the hospital from the same disease six months ago.

The chief medical director of the hospital, Dr Liam McCaughey, said that the disease was not connected to the hospital and had occurred at random.
