Five people, including a five-year-old girl, were killed in road accidents at the weekend. Two sisters from Whitegate, east Cork, died when their car hit a barrier in the central reservation of the Midleton bypass at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Ms Maria Higgins (23) was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, while her sister, Ms Fiona Higgins (25) was taken to Cork University Hospital in a critical condition, and died later in the evening.

In Dublin, Mr Vincent Wade, in his 20s and from Wheatfield Avenue, died when his motorcycle collided with a car at the junction of Ushers Island and Bridgefoot Street on Saturday shortly after 1 a.m.

In the North, a five-year-old girl died in Derry when she was struck by a car as she cycled on Fern Abbey Drive yesterday shortly after 12 noon. She was named as Kori McClintock, of Ferndale Drive, Galliagh.

On Saturday a 15-year-old boy died in hospital 24 hours after he was hit by a car on the Bangor road in Hollywood, Co Down. He was named as Martin McLoughlin, of Seaforde Gardens, from the Short Strand area in Belfast.
