US financial services group PFPC International will create 500 jobs in two locations outside Dublin under the terms of an IDA Ireland-backed package to be made public today.

A further 215 jobs will be created in Cork after three international groups announced new investments.

The jobs with PFPC, which provides services to fund management groups, will be pitched at third-level graduates. More than half the positions will be filled at an undisclosed location in the northeast while the remainder will be filled at a location in the southeast.

News of the PFPC investment emerged last night after Cork received an employment boost with a series of investments by three international groups who will create a total of 215 jobs over the next five years.

Minister for Enterprise Micheál Martin said 140 of the new jobs will be created by US group Alcon Inc, which is investing up to €15.6 million in the expansion of its operation at the IDA Ireland Business and Technology Park on the Model Farm Road in Cork city.

Alcon, which already employs 82 people at its Alcon Laboratories Ireland Ltd plant, is a world leader in the ophthalmic pharmaceuticals and surgical devices sector.

The new jobs will be in areas as diverse as engineering, technical, quality and operations. The investment will make the facility the first site outside the US to manufacture Alcon's leading surgical product, the AcrySol intraocular lens, which is a prosthetic lens that replaces the eye's natural lens following cataract surgery.

Forty five of the new jobs will be created by fellow US company, Cascade Designs Ltd, which makes recreational and medical products largely for the outdoor pursuit and hillwalking consumer markets. The company already employs 85 people at a plant in Midleton where it makes self-inflating sleeping mattresses and other products.

The new jobs in management, manufacturing, accounting and administration will come on stream over the next four years.

The remaining 30 jobs are being created by Siemens Business Services Ltd, a subsidiary of Siemens AG, which will set up a system management centre at its existing building at Penrose Quay in Cork city. These jobs will come on stream over the next four years in a development separate to Siemens AG's project to outsource its own IT services to its Cork operation.

"These three investments are a further endorsement of Cork's enviable reputation as a location for international companies," said Mr Martin.

He paid tribute to IDA Ireland for its role in securing the latest series of investments.
