Fine Gael has called on the National Roads Authority (NRA) to clarify if a series of issues with the safety system installed in the Dublin Port Tunnel have been addressed.

Party transport spokesman Fergus O’Dowd said two reports into the systems – the first from October 2007 and the second from July 2008 – which he obtained under Freedom of Information indentified a series of problems.

The reports suggested that up until July last year the safety infrastructure operating in the tunnel was at the very least “not up to standard” and he called on the NRA to state whether or not it had acted on the recommendations contained within the reports.

Among the issues identified in these reports was insufficient ventilation and air conditioning in an equipment room, causing it to overheat and not function correctly.

The lack of a back-up to deal meant the failure of a single component could lead to a safety system, according to Mr O’Dowd.
