Aviva Ireland will today announce that job losses announced by it last October will be less severe than had originally been envisaged and that it would also be creating 250 jobs in Galway.

Although 180 jobs in Aviva Europe have already gone, it is understood that the group will announce that it will now shed between 500 and 550 jobs in Aviva Ireland, fewer than the 770 job losses which were announced by the company last year.

All redundancies are to be voluntary and departing staff will receive a redundancy package of six wee’ks per year of service capped at 2.5 years after Unite and Aviva agreed terms on the company's restructuring in Ireland.

The insurer will also announce the creation of some 220 jobs in Galway. The jobs will be created in claims, insurance and direct claims.

It is understood that the company was able to curb the number of redundancies it announced last year having put in place a cost-saving programme which has led to more competitive cost and staffing structures.

It is believed the 220 new jobs have been created after the company secured new contracts across the wider business group.

In October the company announced that 770 jobs in Aviva Ireland could be lost and 180 in Aviva Europe.
