. I have a long established rookery on about a dozen sycamores alongside my home. This year I counted about 35 nests. In recent weeks, an apparently ever increasing flock of starlings has started roosting there too and there appears to be no ill will between the two sets of birds. Is this a common occurrence, and can I expect to have the starlings roosting there for the winter?

Paul Higgins, Longford

Large numbers of starlings come in late summer and autumn also to our local rookery when they are flocking before the winter, and they seem to share the trees amicably with the rooks. They then disappear and probably disperse to good feeding areas. Whether they will continue to roost in your trees depends on the local availability of good feeding sites.

. Recently, a flock of starlings came to feed in my garden. Three had vivid orange crests on their heads. Can you help identify them?
