A man wanted on charges arising out of violent disturbances at the 1995 Ireland-England football match in Dublin will be handed over to the Irish authorities despite a slip-up in extradition proceedings, the High Court in London ruled yesterday.
Lawyers for Mr Jerome Lindley, a warehouseman, argued that the police had delayed too long in arranging his removal and he was now entitled to avoid being sent back. But Lord Justice Kennedy said it was clear there had been a "simple oversight" and it would not be right to risk damage to international relations "because of a technicality".
The judge said Mr Lindley and four other English fans had been identified on video tapes showing the serious disturbances at the Ireland-England game at Lansdowne Road, Dublin, in February 1995. Arrest warrants were issued in Ireland and the other four had returned voluntarily.
