Strasbourg - The exiled son of the last king of Italy won the right yesterday to make his case to the European Court of Human Rights in an attempt to overturn a 53-year-old law banning him from his homeland.

The decision hands Vittorio Emanuele of Savoy, son of Umberto II, the right to a public hearing and the court will make a final ruling after weighing the evidence.

A date has not been set for the hearing.
