THE BOARD of the Equality Authority will appoint an acting chief executive in the next few days, it has announced.

It also stressed the authority would continue to work “effectively and independently for the elimination of discrimination and promotion of equality”.

This follows the resignation of Niall Crowley as its chief executive last week. Following its meeting on Monday, it issued a statement noting the resignation with regret, and expressing its appreciation of Mr Crowley’s “dedication, commitment and passion to the equality agenda in Ireland and Europe over the last decade.

“Under his leadership the principles of equality and anti-discrimination have been firmly established across business groups, trade unions and community organisations,” it said.

“Niall Crowley leaves an impressive legacy of work of which he can be immensely proud and the authority wishes him well in whatever he chooses to do in the future and hopes that he will continue to contribute to the cause of equality and the combating of discrimination. While acknowledging the difficult staffing and budgetary circumstances it now faces, the authority is committed and determined to work effectively and independently for the elimination of discrimination and promotion of equality.”
