Weather warnings issued as heavy rainfall expected

More heavy rain is expected on Sunday and Monday with Met Éireann issuing two rainfall warnings for the west and south of the country.

A status orange warning has been issued for Kerry, where rainfall of up to 70mm is expected up until midday on Monday.

Kerry County Council warned that rivers and drainage systems were at capacity and emergency crews were on stand by.

The South Kerry Ploughing Championships and Harvest Show with more thna 100 stands was due to take place at a farm near Killarney but had to be postponed until September 27th.

Sporting and other fixtures were also cancelled after heavy rainfall on Friday left ground sodden. In Templenoe, near Kenmare, the pitch was flooded up to the goal posts.

A lower status yellow warning has been issued for Galway, Mayo, Clare, Cork and Limerick where rainfall of up to 50mm is expected up until midday on Monday.

Met Éireann have forecast outbreaks of rain in most other areas with some heavy bursts and a risk of localised flooding on Sunday.

Monday will be mainly dry and bright in the north and northwest, with just a few scattered showers, but mostly cloudy elsewhere with outbreaks of heavy rain in places.

Clare County Council has appealed to motorists to be careful on roads during the heavy rain.

“Motorists should drive with extreme caution and should allow extra time for journeys. Property owners in areas affected by flooding during recent days are also urged to be vigilant,” a spokesperson for Clare County Council said.
