RUC officers and firefighters came under attack with petrol bombs and other missiles as they responded to emergency call-outs in Belfast last night, the RUC said.

There was no widespread disorder in the city but vehicles were set alight in sporadic outbreaks of violence.

Firefighters attempting to extinguish a blazing car in Clifton Street at 11.30 p.m. last night were stoned by a group of at least six youths aged around 13, an RUC spokesman said.

Petrol bombs were thrown at police officers attending the scene of another arson attack on a road cleaning vehicle in nearby Carrick Hill.
