Ernie Els fired an eight-under-par 65 and opened a three-shot lead over Bob Estes at the halfway stage of the Mercedes Championships in Hawaii.

The second day at the Plantation Course at Kapalua saw the wind increase and the scoring went up accordingly after the field had averaged 69.361 on the opening day.

Els and fellow South African Retief Goosen shared the best round of the day, with Estes, Charles Howell III and Kevin Sutherland each shooting 66s.

Els is on 17 under at 129 and is within striking distance of David Duval's 1999 event record of 26-under 266.

Estes shot his second straight 66 and is two strokes clear of Korea's KJ Choi, who signed for his second 67.

Goosen climbed into a tie for fourth at 135 with Chris Riley and Jerry Kelly, both of whom carded 70s.

Furyk, who won here in 2001, managed a one-under 72 and is tied at 136 with Ian Leggatt.

The $5 million tournament is limited to winners of 2002 PGA Tour events but top-ranked duo Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are not taking part.

Woods is missing as he recovers from knee surgery while Mickelson is on a skiing trip with his family.
