An unexplained massive electricity grid failure plunged much of Algeria, including the capital Algiers, into the dark this evening.

At around 7 p.m. (6 p.m. Irish time) Algiers was plunged into the dark, as were other major cities such as Oran, Bejaia, Tizi Ouzou, Laghouat and Setif.

Officials at the Sonelgaz electricity and gas utility said they do not know the cause of the breakdown, and were working to repair service to affected areas.

The national radio station mentioned the blackout in its 8 p.m. news broadcast, but did not cite a cause.
