'War': what parents should do

Children need calm and reassurance.

Monitor your own conversations with other adults, particularly if they are morbid or apocalyptic.

Reassure your children that what happened was a very long way away and show them how far on a map if necessary.

Explain that adults were upset because it is always sad when people harm others. Tell them how unusual this is.

Explain that people here care about what happened in the United States because it has been home to many Irish people.

Reassure them that nothing is going to change in their personal world and that you will let them know if there is anything they should know.

Ensure that the material they watch on TV or in movies does not resonate with recent events.
