The city goes statuesque

IRELAND AND Europe is expected to be one of the biggest visual-arts events ever to be staged in Dublin

IRELAND AND Europe is expected to be one of the biggest visual-arts events ever to be staged in Dublin. The Sculptors' Society of Ireland is organising this international event, during which 20 works of art will be sited on streets throughout the capital for a six-week period, from September 4th to October 16th.

Among the 10 Irish artists participating in the event are Alan Phelan, Pauline Agnew, Kevin Francis Gray, Michael Minnis, Aine MacGiolla Coda and Sean Taylor. They were given the opportunity to select an artist from another country to exhibit with them. So far, Craig Wood from Scotland, Robaard from the Netherlands and Nusret Pasic from Sarajevo have been paired with Irish sculptors.

According to Aisling Prior of the Sculptors' Society of Ireland, you can expect to see and hear sound installations, a calf sculpted from butter, neon artworks, moving statues, art graffiti, live performances, a vi doe wall and billboard pieces, all deftly sited to surprise unsuspecting pedestrians. The principal locations for these eclectic pieces of work will include the Iveagh Gardens (between Earlsfort Terrace and Harcourt Street) the civic offices at Wood Quay and the Parnell Square area.

A comprehensive education programme for primary and second-level students in Dublin's north inner-city is being arranged to coincide with Ireland and Europe and free guided tours of the event will be arranged for members of the public.
