St Joseph’s Community College, Charlestown: correction to progression rate

In The Irish Times Feeder Schools Report, published on Thursday December 3rd, the third-level progression rate for St Joseph’s Community College in Charlestown, Co Mayo, was recorded as 33 per cent. In fact, 89 per cent of the school’s students progressed to third-level.

We published the figures about St Joseph’s as provided in good faith by the third-level institutions, but they were inaccurate. St Joseph’s recently changed its name, moved under the patronage of the local Education and Training Board and now has a new roll number with the Department of Education. Many colleges did not record these changes or register students as having come from St Joseph’s. The same set of errors were also published in other newspapers on the same day.

The full set of progression figures, for 36 students sitting the Leaving Cert in 2015, are as follows: NUI Galway: 9; GMIT: 6; UL: 5; Sligo IT: 5; Athlone IT: 1; DCU: 1; Mary Immaculate College: 1; Marino Institute of Education: 1; students progressing to third level who sat their Leaving Cert prior to 2015: 2.

At 89 per cent, this gives St Joseph’s the fifth highest progression rate in Co Mayo. The Irish Times regrets this error.
