Site of the week: www.leavingcert.net

This stands as an example of what a study resource site should be. Although it only covers seven Leaving Cert subjects - English, maths, physics, chemistry, biology, business and art - what it does with those is highly impressive: well thought-out, comprehensive, regularly updated and user-friendly.

LeavingCert.Net's prime feature is its subject-by-subject directories of sites and pages of all sorts, sizes and origins. What makes it stand out from the crowd is the way in which it presents its links. Each subject is broken down into syllabus topics; each topic has an introductory essay and a cleverly structured set of links to useful websites.

Each site linked to is described and rated, indicating whether it is suitable for higher-level or ordinary-level students or teachers or both.

A monthly e-zine newsletter is published on the site: browse through back issues to find invaluable subject-by-subject advice on online exam resources.

The presentation is expertly done, with clean, no-nonsense design. Finding your way around is made simple thanks to a signposting system the likes of which you won't find on many major international sites.

A major upgrade is planned for this month, to include material on a further 10 subjects, more exam preparation advice, revision planners and model answers.

The good news is that, as with almost all websites, you can access all areas for free. This may not always be so: online publishers do have to make a profit. Expect a development whereby some material is free and more detailed material will have to be paid for.

Next week: A third-level resource site
