Topic: HEAR and DARE

Q: My daughter is eligible for Dare and is 25 points off her first choice. She is applying for a recheck in two subjects. If she doesn't get her first choice on Monday but subsequently gets an upgrade could she get a DARE offer at that stage?

A:

It is possible that she could get an offer if she gets an upgrade sufficient to bring her position in the course merit list up to where she would have been originally entitled to a place.   But all this would not happen until October so lets hope she gets her place on Monday.

Q. I got 355 points, I qualify for HEAR too. My first choice was 455 last year, second is 415 and third is 425. Is it possible to get at least one of these with HEAR?

A:

It is possible, but how possible depends on a number of variables, in particular which colleges you have applied to and how they treat successful HEAR applicants.   It can vary considerably from college to college.   A phone call to the relevant college admissions offices might be helpful.

Q: I got 395 points but hoped to get into business in DCU which was 440 points last year, or business courses in NUIM which were 400 points last year. I have been accepted for the DARE scheme. Do you think I have any chance of getting into DCU or is the gap too wide?

A:

Given that you are an eligible applicant under the DARE scheme, I think you may have a very good chance of receiving an offer from either college.   If you want to get further information you could give the admissions office in the two colleges involved a call and seek more information from them regarding how they treat DARE applicants.

Q: I got 350 points. The course I wish to do was 380 points last year. I met all the requirements and also got my HEAR application accepted. Will I receive offers for my course on the 18th or are students hoping to get in through HEAR dealt with after?

A:

Yes, if you are entitled to a place you will receive your offer on Monday the 18th like all other CAO applicants and given what you describe above you look like you are in a good position for the course you want to do.

Q: My first choice on the CAO is veterinary and last year it was 575 points, I got 530 points today but I've also been accepted onto the HEAR scheme and thinking about getting one of my results rechecked, do you think I have a good chance of getting in?

A:

I would say you have a good shot at it given you have qualified under the HEAR scheme. It is just so hard to know what way they will go with this. I would advise contacting the admissions office in UCD and getting some guidance from them on this case.
