Dubliner jailed for British killing

A DUBLIN MAN has been jailed in England for nine years for killing a man he ran over as he fled a burglary in December 2001. Jason Brady (28), Tallaght, was found not guilty of the murder of lecturer Charles Tandy (56).

Brady reversed a stolen Toyota over Mr Tandy who had chased after him when he stole a laptop from a college in Birmingham. He admitted the charges and was sentenced to nine years for manslaughter, three years for assault and one year for burglary. The sentences will run concurrently.

Brady returned to Ireland knowing the father of two was dead but denying he intending to kill or cause serious injury.

Michael Burrows QC, prosecuting, said the defendant was linked to the crime by fingerprints found in the car, as well as by DNA in a shoe left at the scene.

Judge William Davis told Brady yesterday: “The jury has found that at no time did you intend any serious harm, but what you did do was to threaten and kick out at people who were doing no more than trying to stop a burglar from getting away with it.”

Brady is now in a wheelchair due to a traffic accident in 2006. His lawyers contested his extradition at the High Court in Dublin on the basis their client was terrified his medical needs would not be met in a British prison.

The judge found that while Brady was entitled to every sympathy, there were health grounds on which to refuse the order. He was flown to Britain in January 2008.
