The Dublin Docklands Development Authority has been granted planning permission for a new pedestrian bridge across the River Liffey in Dublin.

The bridge, which will be east of the Talbot Memorial Bridge, is intended to provide a link between the Trinity College and Merrion Square areas and the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC).

"The new footbridge will be an excellent addition to Dublin's fine series of bridges", said Mr Peter Coyne, chief executive of the Docklands Authority. "Not only will it serve to link the North and South cities, but it will also help animate the Liffey quayside and allow for much quicker and convenient pedestrian access".

Work is expected to begin later this year with a completion date next year.

An open design competition was held last year, with Brian O'Halloran & Associates and O'Connor Sutton Cronin being appointed architects and engineers for the bridge, respectively.
