French software company Business Objects is to hire 100 research and development staff for its Dublin office in a €29 million investment.

Business Objects, which is a subsidiary of German software giant SAP, plans to establish a research and development unit at SAP's facility in Citywest outside Dublin.

The IDA-supported expansion will be staggered over four years with half of the staff expected to be recruited by the end of the year.

Business Objects, which bills itself as the largest business intelligence firm in the world, established an operations centre in Dublin in 2004 and employs 200 people at its Park West offices.

Tánaiste Mary Coughlan said the investment was a huge boost for Ireland.

"It is the result of two highly successful companies merging technologies and expertise to create a winning formula for future success," she said.

"It is also a tremendous boost to our reputation as a prime location for top level research and development investment from major players in the IT industry worldwide."
