Det Sgt Walter O'Connell said Mr Connell was effectively homeless at the time of his death. He had met Comiskey who had let him stay in his flat at Seville Place on December 3rd. The following morning Mr Connell took Comiskey's dole card, claimed his money and went drinking.

A row erupted when Comiskey confronted him about the dole card in a pub. Dunne was also present. Later that night, in Comiskey's flat, a fight ensued.
