A Dublin man has gone on trial at the Special Criminal Court charged with possessing a pipe bomb at a petrol station in Co Waterford last year.

Samuel Devlin (51), Mountjoy Square, has pleaded not guilty to unlawful possession of an improvised explosive device at Butlerstown roundabout, Cork Road, on October 15th.

Opening the prosecution’s case, Garnet Orange said Mr Devlin and another man had stopped at the garage to refuel. Gardaí uncovered a pipe bomb and components in the boot.

The court would hear that these components were intended to create a “time- delay detonation device” for the bomb, Mr Orange said.
