A Dublin man, Mr Keith Hastings (24), of Cashel Avenue, Crumlin, was charged in Kilcock District Court yesterday with possession of ecstasy tablets in Killegland, Ashbourne, Co Meath, on Monday afternoon.

Sgt John Sherlock opposed bail, saying the offences were serious and he was not entirely satisfied with Mr Hastings's address. However, Judge John Brophy set bail on the accused man's own bond of £15,000 and an independent surety of £50,000.

He remanded him in custody for one week to appear again in Dunshaughlin District Court. The amounts set in the bail terms were described by a solicitor, Mr Oliver Shanley, as excessive and equivalent to keeping his client in prison.
