The drug-dealer son of a veteran garda walked free from a District Court yesterday after he received an 11-month suspended jail term.

Tony Kirby (25) of Sweetfields Estate, Youghal, who had pleaded guilty earlier this week to two charges of possessing drugs for the purpose of selling or supplying to others and one of possession of illegal drugs, was also ordered to do 240 hours community service in lieu of a second nine-month sentence if reports show he is suitable.

Sgt Jack Gaine told a special sitting of Youghal District Court on Tuesday how two undercover gardai went to a disco in the Hilltop Hotel, Youghal, last January 9th and 10th and were each sold an amphetamine tablet by the defendant.

The following night there was a Garda raid on the premises and Kirby was arrested. In a capsule box found on him, there were 39 amphetamine tablets and two packets of the drug in powder form.
