A 19-year-old Co Monaghan man has drowned in a swimming accident in Australia.
Damien Crosby of St Macartan’s Villas, Carrickmacross, had been working on a remote farm at Dooruma, Clermont when he drowned in a reservoir in which he had been swimming with friends.
He had been on a year-long working holiday in Australia with his cousin David and three other friends, who are all members of Carrickmacross Emmets hurling club.
Mr Crosby was due to return home in June.
The nearest town to where the tragedy occurred is Collinsville, a 90 minute flight time away from the farm “station” and 1,245 km north of Brisbane, Queensland.
The alarm was raised at approximately 5pm Irish time on Saturday.
Due to the remoteness of the location, Mr Crosby’s body was not recovered by Australian police until about 3.30am Irish time yesterday.
Mr Crosby is survived by his parents Gerry and Regina, by his brother Stephen and extended family and friends.
