The driver who died after his car went out of control and overturned into Dublin's Grand Canal yesterday morning with five passengers inside has been named as Mr Dominick Dolan (23), of Ludford Park, Ballinteer, Co Dublin. The other five young people, all in their 20s, are said to be comfortable in the Meath and St James's hospitals in Dublin.

The accident happened at 1.45 a.m. yesterday when the Toyota Corolla in which the group was travelling hit a wall at Parnell Road in the Dolphin's Barn area of the city. The car overturned and landed on its roof in the Grand Canal.

Passers-by formed a chain and pulled the occupants from the car. Two of the survivors, a man and a woman, are from Co Limerick; two others are from Rathfarnham, Dublin, while the fifth is from the South Circular Road, Dublin.

The driver was pronounced dead at the Meath Hospital at 6 a.m. yesterday.
