Driver arrested after cyclist killed in Co Kildare

The man in his 80s died after being hit by a car in Clane this afternoon

A man in his 20s has been arrested in connection with the death of a cyclist in Co Kildare this afternoon.

The cyclist, a man in his 80s, was hit by a car on the Dublin Road in Clane at around 2pm.

The driver of the car was arrested at the scene for drink driving and was taken to Naas Garda station, where he is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

A post mortem on the body of the dead man is due to take place at Naas General Hospital.

The road is currently closed to facilitate an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and diversions are in place.
