David Beckham continued his dream start to his Real Madrid career when he scored three minutes into his first league match in a 2-1 win over Real Betis at the Bernabeu tonight.

The England captain was on hand to sidefoot home a Ronaldo pass after the Brazilian and fellow striker Raul had exchanged a neat one-two to carve open the Betis defence.

The goal, the first to be scored by any player in this season's Spanish league, was Beckham's second in two games at the Bernabeu.

Beckham also had a hand in Real's second goal against Betis when he started a rapid counter-attack which ended with a superbly taken volleyed strike in the 62nd minute from Ronaldo to ensure the league champions victory on the opening day of the season.

Juanito had replied for Real Betis after 34 minutes with a headed goal.

The former Manchester United midfielder scored a rare headed goal, with Ronaldo once again providing the pass, in Real's 3-0 defeat of Real Mallorca on Wednesday when his side won the Spanish Super Cup 4-2 on aggregate.

In the other early first division match of Saturday night, Espanyol and Real Sociedad drew 1-1. Four matches had later kickoffs.
