Domino's is to create up to 1,500 jobs in the Britain and Ireland in the next year.

The pizza delivery company, which holds a master franchise from Domino's in the United States to operate the brand in Britain and Ireland, is planning 50 new stores this year as part of a wider target of 500 by 2006.

The chain is setting its sights on the north of England, where it has only 37 stores out of a total of 280 throughout Britain and Ireland.

The brand's most successful global franchisee, Mr Richard P Mueller, said Domino's hoped to open around one-third of its new stores in the north of England over the next two years.

Mr Mueller, who runs 158 Domino's branches across Louisiana and Mississippi, said the British expansion plans were realistic as the group had learnt from mistakes made elsewhere and had a strong brand presence through initiatives such as sponsoring the Simpsonson Sky One.

Domino's, which employs 6,600 people through franchises across Britain and Ireland, made record sales last year, with the average branch making around £9,100 sterling per week.
