Dubliner Ken Doherty is through to the quarter-finals of the UK Championship in York after beating Paul Hunter 9-4 this afternoon.

Doherty will play either Steve Davis or John Higgins in the next round.

"I don't think I played as well as I did against Stephen Maguire in the last round," said Doherty.

"But this was a different kind of game and there was more safety involved. You can't always go toe to toe with these guys because you're not always going to come out on top.

"So this was a good result because I'm sure Paul was favourite for this match."

Stephen Hendry is three more victories away from a record equalling sixth UK title and his first since 1996 after overcoming Graeme Dott 9-6.

Hendry's quarter-final opponent will be Chris Small or last year's quarter-final conqueror Mark Williams.
