Madrid - The second trial implicating the former Socialist leaders in the 1980s dirty war against ETA opened in Madrid yesterday, Paddy Woodworth writes.

A Guardia Civil officer, Gen Enrique Galindo, and a former Socialist civil governor, Mr Julen Elgorriaga, face charges of organising the kidnapping, torture and murder of two young members of ETA, Joxean Lasa and Joxi Zabala. Mr Rafael Vera, a former deputy interior minister in Mr Felipe Gonzalez's governments, and already convicted of another kidnapping, is accused of covering up the crimes.

The case has attracted exceptional public attention because of the horrific way in which the two victims were tortured and then "disappeared" in a quicklime grave.
