The convicted fraudster involved in Cherie Blair's property deal has arrived home in Australia after being deported from Ireland.

Peter Foster was detained by immigration officials in Dublin Airport on Monday after arriving on a flight from Paris. He was held overnight in Mountjoy prison. Last December, Mr Foster dropped an appeal against deportation from Britain

The Australian was at the centre of the scandal last year involving his role in getting a lower price for Mrs Blair in her purchase of two flats in Bristol.

Arriving in Sydney airport, Foster (40) told reporters he had chosen to return to Australia to clear his name over a civil action pending there against his weight-loss company.

Foster said he was free to go anywhere in the world but decided to return home to defend his Chaste Corp in a civil action brought by the nation's consumer watchdog, the Australian Competition and Consumer Association (ACCC).

"I've come back to the Gold Coast to prove that I'm not running or hiding from anything," he said.

A spokesman for the Australian Federal Police said Foster was not wanted on any outstanding warrants in Australia. He has been previously convicted on three continents for peddling fradulent slimming drugs and using false documents.
