The five-point declaration launched at a peace conference in the Basque Country last Monday, calling on Eta to abandon violence and for talks on concessions to prisoners, gained wider international support yesterday – though many leading Spanish figures remained very critical.

Former British prime minister Tony Blair described it as “a window of opportunity to end the last armed conflict in Europe”, and former US president Jimmy Carter and senator George Mitchell also sent messages of support.
