This day week, December 6th, the nation celebrates the 75th anniversary of the foundation of the State. As Quidnunc has already reported the two main parties, FF and FG, on the initiative of Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, called a truce and agreed a joint day. Although both have already held their own celebrations on what they believe to be the vital date in our history, (FF in January 1994 to mark the first Dail in 1919, and FG last April as it sees 1922 as more important) agreement was reached and next Saturday we will celebrate, if that's the right word in the eyes of our Northern brethren, the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty on that day in 1921. There will be a State reception for hundreds in Dublin Castle, hosted by the Taoiseach, and one million special stamps, depicting the GPO in the background and the old 2d map-of-Ireland stamp in the front, will be launched.
