Customs seize 3 million cigarettes in Rosslare

Officers from Revenue's Customs Service at Rosslare today seized 3.29 million cigarettes valued at over €1 million and with a potential duty in excess of €791,000.

An articulated truck and refrigerated container valued at €70,000 were also seized.

A 41-year-old Armagh man appeared in court this evening charged under Section 119 of the Finance Act 2001 and Section 10A of the Finance Act 1997.

He has been remanded in custody to appear before Enniscorthy District Court on Wednesday.

Customs say the haul of Superking, Benson & Hedges, Regal and No.1 brand cigarettes were found as a result of risk profiling by its officers. The load had arrived by ferry from Cherbourg and had been concealed behind empty fish boxes in the container.
