A woman who assaulted another woman on the street in Dublin, kicking her in the head and standing on her mouth when she screamed, has been given a suspended jail sentence.

Ann Byrne (34) of St Donagh’s Road, Kilbarrack, Dublin, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm and attempted robbery on August 25th, 2015.

In Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, Garda John Cahill said he was called to Burlington Road following reports a woman had been assaulted.

He found the victim in an extremely distressed state on the street, with blood on her face and a swollen lip, cheekbone and eye.

Chatting

The court heard the victim was walking along the road when she met Byrne, whom she knew. Garda Cahill said the women were chatting when suddenly Byrne started assaulting her.

Byrne initially gave gardaí­ a false name and denied hurting the woman before she admitted to the assault. Luigi Rea BL, defending, said his client had addiction issues at the time of the offence.

Giving Byrne a suspended 18-month sentence, Judge Karen O’Connor said the attack was a “violent and unprovoked assault”.
