Two young men killed in Co Down crash

Police say men involved in fatal Rostrevorcrash believed to be in their late teens

Two young men have died in an overnight crash near Rostrevor, Co Down.

Police said a silver Volkswagen Bora left the Kilbroney Road shortly before midnight. The vehicle struck the perimeter wall of a bungalow which caused an oil tank to go on fire.

A third man was taken to hospital where his condition is described as critical.

The identity of the dead and injured has not been confirmed but a PSNI spokesperson said they are are believed to be in their late teens.

An elderly female resident in the house was treated for shock at the scene before being taken to hospital.

A spokesperson for the Northern Ireland fire and rescue service said the service received a call at at 11.49pm to a report of a crash at the Kilbroney Road area of Rostrevor.

Two fire appliances from Warrenpoint and two from Newry were deployed to the scene and firefighters using breathing apparatus and thermal imaging cameras extinguished the fire.

“Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service finished at 2.07am,” the spokesperson said.

Police have appealed for witnesses that may have witnessed the crash to contactthem.

PSNI inspector Stephen Humphries said: “We are working to establish the circumstances of the collision and I am appealing for witnesses to come forward.

“I would also like to hear from anyone who was travelling on the Kilbroney Road prior to the time of the collision and who may have seen a silver Volkswagen Bora on the road.
