Man charged in connection with fatal shooting in Tallaght

A 58-year-old man is due to appear before a special sitting of Dublin District court tomorrow morning in relation to the shooting of 66-year-old Mary Dargan and the attempted murder of her daughter in a Dublin housing estate yesterday.

Ms Dargan died after sustaining shotgun injuries in the incident which took place at her home in the Killinarden Estate in Tallaght.

Her daughter, named locally as Karina, who is 27, was also shot in the incident. She was brought to Tallaght Hospital where her injuries were described as non life threatening.

A four-year-girl, who was also at the house at the time of the shooting, was uninjured in the incident.

The 58-year-old man received medical attention at St James’ Hospital in Dublin yesterday following the incident but was later released back into Garda custody before being questioned by detectives at Tallaght Garda station under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act, 1939.

He was charged at Tallaght Garda station this afternoon and will appear before Dublin District Court sitting at the Criminal Courts of Justice tomorrow morning.

The area around the house in the Killinarden Estate in Tallaght remained sealed off today with bouquets of flowers laid at the front door and children’s bicycles visible outside.

A neighbour who had known the dead woman for most of his life, described her as a lovely person who had lived in the estate since it was built in the 1970s.

He said he was extremely saddened by her death which he described as “shocking” and “tragic”.

Other neighbours were reluctant to speak to the media, asking that their privacy and that of the family be respected.
