Gardai viewed the CCTV footage and identified the suspect.

While the man has not yet been arrested, it is understood gardaí know his identity.

He is believed to be from Strabane in Co Tyrone, just across the Border from Lifford.

Gardaí are also carrying out a full audit of all paperwork at the station, but they do not believe any important documents were taken.

“We believe his was the work of an opportunist thief and we do not believe a lot of planning want into this robbery,” a Garda source said.

“The items have not yet ben recovered but we do have a suspect but he has not yet been arrested.

“We do not believe this was the work of any paramilitary organisation but we would like to recover the property.”
