Man (65) dies after found stabbed in Limerick apartment

A 65-year-old man found unconscious at an apartment in Limerick city yesterday died from a single stab wound to the back.

A murder inquiry is underway following the discovery of pensioner, Patrick Redmond who was living at an apartment in Mount Kennett on the Dock Road. Originally from Dublin the separated father of three grown up daughters, had been living in Limerick for a number of years.

Gardaí were last night working to establish a motive for the fatal stabbing which took place in the early hours of yesterday morning.

It’s understood one of the lines of inquiry being pursued is that the death of the 65-year-old who did not have a criminal record, may be connected to a domestic issue. Mr Redmond was living in an apartment on the same floor of the complex where he was found for the past few years.

The 65-year-old who was in poor health and suffered from arthritis, was only recently released from hospital where he was being treated for a number of underlying health issues. It’s understood he was also the victim of a burglary at his city centre apartment in recent weeks.

A post mortem carried out by Deputy State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis confirmed the 65-year-old died from a fatal stab wound to the back.

An incident room has been set up at Henry Street Garda Station, and Superintendent Daniel Keane who is leading the investigation. “We are appealing for witnesses or anybody who may have information or who may have been in the Mount Kennett Road area inside or outside the apartments any time between 10pm on Saturday night and 2am on Sunday. “We would appeal for them to come forward and speak to us in confidence,” he said.
