Top UN counsel to speak in Dublin
Patricia O’Brien, the United Nations’ most senior lawyer, will speak in Dublin this week about the legal challenges facing the organisation.
Her lecture will address the need to promote the international rule of law; the relationship between peace and justice and managing post-conflict situations, and enhancement of the UN itself.
The lecture will take place at 6.30pm on Thursday, March 11th, in St Michan’s Church, Church Street, Dublin 7. Ms O’Brien will be giving the Irish Society of International Law’s fifth annual Seán Lester lecture, “Legal Challenges Facing the United Nations: An Appraisal from the Legal Counsel’s Perspective”. James Kingston, Department of Foreign Affairs legal adviser, will chair the lecture, which is open to the public and is free.
Director retires from Equality Tribunal
The director of the Equality Tribunal, Melanie Pine, is retiring from the tribunal in May after 10 years running it since it was set up. She previously served in five Government departments.
The tribunal was set up under the Equal Status and Equal Employment Acts to hear claims of discrimination in employment or in the provision of goods or services on any of the nine grounds specified in the legislation.
The position is set to be advertised in coming weeks.
Conference on tax litigation, practice
A conference on taxation litigation and practice takes place on Saturday, March 20th, from 9.30am-1pm in the Distillery Building, 145-151 Church Street, Dublin.
Chaired by Appeal Commissioner John O’Callaghan, speakers include Paddy Hunt SC, Anthony Collins SC, Collector General Gerry Harrahill, Sean Guerin BL, Lorna Gallagher BL, Kelley Smith BL and Aoife Goodman BL. Topics will include appealing Revenue assessment and litigating in court, debt management in a difficult economic climate, judicial review in tax cases, and stamp duty after the boom. Seminar on religion in primary schools
The Centre for Criminal Justice and Human Rights at UCC's Faculty of Law is holding a seminar on Accommodating Religious Diversity in Irish Primary Schools: Legal and Practical Challengesthis week.
Speakers will be Dr Paul Colton, Bishop of Cork, Cloyne and Ross, and Eoin Daly, Government of Ireland Scholar at UCC Department of Law. It takes place on Thursday, March 11th, at 1pm in Room 164 Áras na Laoi, and will be chaired by Dr Conor O’Mahony.
