Five-month-old boy killed in Athlone road crash

Three-year-old child also injured after car strikes barrier on eastbound bypass

A five month old baby has been killed and a three-year-old child injured after the car in which they were travelling hit a barrier on the Athlone bypass.

The male driver and female front passenger, both in their late 20s, were uninjured.

The toddler was in the back seat of the vehicle and her injuries are described as not life threatening.

The baby boy was taken to Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe, with serious injuries and was later pronounced dead.

The eastbound Athlone bypass between junctions 13 and 11 is currently closed. Garda Forensic Collision Investigators are at scene.
