A book of evidence has to be served on Mr Farrell after the DPP directed he should face “trial on indictment”, meaning his case will be dealt with in the Circuit Court, which has tougher sentencing powers.

Mr Farrell has not yet indicated how he intends to plead. One of the charges is for causing €43,816 worth of damages to front gate at Trinity College Dublin.

He is also accused of causing about €18,000 worth of damage to other property in Trinity and to vehicles on nearby streets.
