Man pleads guilty to attempted murder of ex-partner in Dublin

A 50-year-old man has pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of his ex-partner in Dublin nearly two years ago.

Denis Leahy, of Queen Street, Dublin 7, was charged with attempting to murder Rose Kenny (51) at School Street Flats, Dublin 8 on September 23rd, 2014.

On Monday at the Central Criminal Court, Leahy pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Leahy had pleaded guilty to intentionally or recklessly causing serious harm to Ms Kenny at the same address on the same date.

On Monday, Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy told the jury of nine men and three women that the trial was expected to last four days before Mr Justice Paul Butler.

Claim of vicious assault

Opening the prosecution case this afternoon, Mr Patrick Marrinan SC told the court the jury would hear the accused launched into a vicious assault on Rose Kenny on September 23rd where she was stabbed “a large number of times”.

At 2.40pm today, Mr Sean Gillane SC asked for his client to be rearraigned on count one on the indictment.

Leahy then pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of Rose Kenny in Dublin nearly two years ago.

Mr Marrinan told Mr Justice Butler the case would not be proceeding and asked that the accused be remanded in custody.

Mr Justice Butler told the jury: “This man has pleaded guilty to everything which he has been charged with. Your function is now over.”

Leahy was then remanded in custody ahead of his sentence hearing on July 14th, when a victim impact statement will be read to the court.
