Alleged terrorism supporter who fled to Ireland 20 years ago too sick to attend court

Abderrahmane Yahiaoui was convicted in absentia in France of facilitating Islamic terror

An Algerian man who fled to Ireland from France over 20 years ago after being accused of terrorism related offences is to apply for bail next week.

Abderrahmane Yahiaoui, who is aged in his early 50s, is believed to have been living in Dublin for about 22 years after arriving here in the late 90s or early 2000s.

He was convicted in absentia in France of offences linked to the facilitation of Islamic terrorism.

Gardaí recently received an alert through the Schengen Information System (SIS II) that Mr Yahiaoui may be living in Ireland and was wanted in France.

The system cross-references the Garda Pulse system with wanted person notices from other EU police forces.

Ireland formally joined the system earlier this year.

Following additional Garda inquiries, Mr Yahiaoui was arrested last Friday by gardaí from the Extradition Unit.

He was brought before the High Court on Friday evening and was to appear again on Wednesday morning. However the court heard on Wednesday he was too ill to attend, resulting in the case being adjourned to September 23.

He remains in custody and is expected to apply for bail on that date.

Mr Yahiaoui is an Algerian national who had been living in Marseille prior to leaving for Ireland. He has been employed as a courier while living in Ireland.
