A CHINESE woman arrested after a major cannabis factory was disrupted in Derry claimed she was made to have sex with workers locked in the premises day and night, the High Court in Belfast heard.

Mei Lin Yun (40) told police she had been forced into prostitution at an address in the city where drugs were being grown on an industrial scale, prosecutors said. Crown counsel said more than 600 plants with an estimated value in excess of £300,000 (€340,000) were discovered during a raid on a house in the Templeard area of the city.

The discovery was said to be linked to similar alleged operations at properties in Limavady and Magherafelt.

Ms Yun faces charges of cultivating and possessing cannabis with intent to supply in connection with the police searches stretching back more than a year.

Kate McKay, prosecuting, told the court yesterday Ms Yun was one of three people detained after the cannabis factory in Derry was uncovered in January. “She said she was a victim of this whole set-up,” Ms McKay told the court.

Mr Justice McLaughlin rejected the bail application given the risk of her absconding and due to the seriousness of the offence.
